He came to meet me in the desert

In 1997, I was in a dead-end. My life was like a desert and I felt hopeless. At that time, I was living without God because I had been disappointed 14 years earlier and I had decided to “put Him in a drawer” and forget Him. Now I was so desperate that I wanted to die.

After thinking a lot about it, I just prayed like I used to when I was a child, and said “God, if you exist, please take me out of here”. Then, my mum asked me if I wanted to go for a two-week holiday in Turkey as there was a cheap deal and she thought it would do me good. It sounded like a funny idea to me to go alone to a Muslim country far away, but I accepted because it would be better than my present situation. She went to the travel agency and tried to book it, but could not because the plane was already full. There was another good deal for one week in Tunisia, which I agreed to, and she booked it for me.

So, in August 1997, I was leaving Belgium on my own for the first time to go to an unknown territory. In fact, I was never alone: in the plane, I met a lady from Liège, who was not happy with her travel agency. They told her at the last minute that she had to go to the same hotel as me, rather than where she had booked for. Then, at the hotel, I met a couple who lived in Auderghem, and we spent a lot of time together.

My life really changed when I decided to take a two-day trip to the desert. It was a difficult choice as I had just the money necessary to be able to do it, but I thought it was too good an opportunity to miss. Another challenge was that it would be with Russian and German tourists, so it was not in French or in English, but I had learned German at school and I really wanted to see the desert.

That day, I had to get up very early for the trip. It was not difficult anyway because every day I was wakened up by the 4 o’clock Muslim morning prayer. I got up and went on the terrace to watch the sun rising over the sea. It was wonderful and I decided to come back to my Father in Heaven and follow Jesus Christ for the rest of my life. He welcomed me like the father in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). He came to meet me in the desert, the Tunisian desert and the desert of my life. A symbol of my return to God is a lovely black and gold fabric bracelet. It was given to me by the man who drove the horse and cart. I sat next to him because I didn’t dare to ride a camel like the other tourists in my group. These bracelets were being sold when we stopped in the desert for a drink. I couldn’t afford to buy anything, but the driver wanted me to have it.

From then on, I started really walking with God and He has already done lots of marvellous things in my life.
